Job Description Summary/Objective: • Responsible for conducting preoperative testing and patient counseling. Essential Functions: • Effectively organizes time, equipment, supplies, and personnel. • Uses equipment effectively by anticipating patient needs and providing appropriate care. • Confirms that proper techniques and procedures are used per accepted standards of practice. • Assists in inventory of supplies, drugs, and equipment to maintain availability and stock levels in the preoperative area. • Maintains order and cleanliness of preoperative area. • Performs thorough preoperative patient assessment required in the outpatient setting. • Assists in assessing the physical and emotional status of the patient prior to admission. • Provides preoperative instruction and explanation of patient rights and responsibilities. • Describes the perioperative experience to the patient and/or their authorized representative, including what to expect before, during, and after the procedure, and how their authorized representative will participate. • Obtains pertinent patient records prior to patient’s arrival. • Witnesses informed consent for surgery, patients’ rights/responsibilities, and preoperative/postoperative instructions. • Obtains necessary signatures. • Informs patient and/or their authorized representative about routine care and procedures related to the perioperative experience. • Discusses all findings with anesthesia provider(s) prior to anesthesia provider(s) preoperative evaluation of patient. • Provides comfort and reassurance to the patient and supports the patient’s right to privacy, dignity, and confidentiality. • Documents preoperative care per policy/procedure. • Ensures that the patient’s chart is complete on day before surgery is scheduled. • Performs duties as circulating nurse; assists in managing the nursing care of the patient during surgery. Supervisory Responsibility: • This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department. Work Environment: • This job operates in a medical facility where there is patient care equipment. Hazardous materials are also present. • Exposure to patients' conditions and some unpleasant sights, smells and contagious diseases is possible. Physical Demands: • This position requires intermittent physical activity, including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping and crouching as well as lifting and supporting patients. Travel: • No travel is expected for this position. Required skills & experience (the "must haves" to be considered) Required Education and Experience: • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. • Knowledge regarding the nursing process and its application, including the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care. • BLS and ACLS within 30 days of hire-PALS within 90 days of hire Preferred Education and Experience: • Bachelor's degree in nursing • Previous experience in ICU or perioperative nursing experience • Additional Eligibility Qualifications • Current state license to practice as a registered nurse. What you need to know • Relocation will be considered, but strong preference provided to Houston-area candidates. • Day shift: 6am - 3pm, or 7:30am - 4:30pm depending on needs.
